Chapter 17: The Motion
The shareholders' meeting was held on Friday in the ballroom of the Lowry Grand, because the boardroom would not hold the crowd.
Two hundred people sat in gold chairs, and the press stood along the back wall with their phones raised.
I sat at the long table on the dais between Beckett and Imogen.
Under the tablecloth, Beckett's hand lay over my knee.
He had not moved it for forty minutes.
The director in the grey suit stood at the podium, and he was enjoying himself.
"A fortune handed to an employee," he said. "A woman who hid a pregnancy, who benefited from her own injury, and who has since persuaded this company's founder to ruin an innocent young woman."
He gestured at the first row.
Tanya sat there in a cream suit with her lawyer and her pearls, her eyes lowered, looking small and wronged.
A murmur ran through the chairs.
"I move," the director said, "that the transfer be voided and Ms. Treacy removed."
"Seconded," said someone from the back.
Imogen leaned toward the microphone.
"Before the vote, the chair would like to call a witness."
"There's no witness on the agenda."
"There's one on mine," Imogen said. "Dani Broussard, please come in."
The side doors opened.
Dani walked down the center aisle in a plain blue dress, with her short red hair pinned back and her hands shaking.
Behind her came a heavy man in a wrinkled shirt whom I had last seen in a lounge office, counting out cash.
The lounge manager did not look at Tanya.
