Chapter 19: Full Knowledge

Cora's POV

I came through Imogen's door with a bag of Nate's pastries and found the two of them standing on opposite sides of a desk, not speaking.

Beckett saw the bag, and then my face, and his mouth went crooked.

"She texted you."

"She texted me one line," I said. "'Ask him about section nine.'"

"I said it was one text," said Imogen.

I put the pastries on the desk and held out my hand for the will.

I read the paragraph twice, and then I read the date on the stamp.

"Midnight tomorrow," I said.

"Yes."

"And if you don't confirm, I lose it."

"Yes," Beckett said. "And I'm not going to confirm it."

I looked up.

"Not like this," he said. "Not because the director backed me into a corner. And not because I feel sick every time I think of that staircase."

"That's a lot of nots."

"I know. I'm bad at this."

I set the will down.

My first feeling was a flat, clean relief, and it surprised me.

"Then let it go," I said.

Imogen's eyebrows climbed.

"I mean it. I came in to resign. The shares were the only thing that made me stay, and look at what they've cost. A lawsuit. A hearing. A stranger reading my chart to a room." I rubbed my forehead. "If it reverts, it reverts. I'll go back to eleven hundred dollars a month and Nate's couch."

"You won't," Beckett said.

"I can."

"Cora, you could. That's the problem." He came around the desk. "You could walk away from a billion dollars without blinking. That's why I don't want to give it to you for the wrong reason."
