Chapter 10: Her Price

Helena Acheson took her time.

She crossed the carpet in four unhurried steps and stopped in front of Stewart, near enough to touch his lapel.

Her perfume reached me a second later, faint and sweet.

It was the same one that had hung in my bedroom.

I heard a small ringing in my ears.

"Stewart," she said. "You look tired."

"You're in his office."

"I was sitting in on a consultation."

"With the man writing the report that takes my son," said Stewart.

"With a distinguished physician," she said. Her eyes slid to me. "Hello, Hallie. I'd have recognized you from the party, but you left in such a hurry."

I couldn't speak.

I looked at the coat, the red, the pinned blonde hair.

I looked at Bradley.

He was staring at the floor.

"Dee," I said finally.

She smiled.

It was a small private smile, the kind you give to a joke only you remember.

"My father's name for me," she said. "Bradley liked it. He said it made me sound approachable."

Behind us, another family quietly gathered their coats and left.

"You're the woman in his office," I said.

"I'm the woman who has been in his bed for fourteen months," she said pleasantly. "I thought you'd have worked that out. You're supposedly smart."

"You went to my husband," Stewart said, "to get at my son."

"I went to the best neurologist in the city," said Helena. "It turned out he came with a wife."

She looked me over, head to foot, with the patience of someone pricing a chair.

"I'll admit I expected someone smaller," she said. "Bradley described you as furniture. I see now he meant you were solid."
