Chapter 14: Line by Line
Bradley was sitting on Stewart's front steps at six that evening, in the rain, with his cardboard box between his feet.
He had no coat.
I saw him through the sidelight and stood in the hall for a full minute with my hand on the lock.
"Don't," Stewart said behind me. "I'll go out with you."
"He'll talk to you the way he talks to a bouncer."
"He can talk to a bouncer."
"Stay with Freddie," I said. "He's building the blue bridge, and he wants somebody to watch him do it."
Stewart's jaw worked, and then he nodded.
I took the grocery bag from the hall closet, the one I'd come with, and went out and shut the door.
Bradley looked up.
His hair was flat with rain, and he looked ten years older than he had on Friday.
"Hallie," he said. "Thank you for coming out."
"You're on the steps of a man you tried to destroy. I came out so you'd leave."
"I need to say something first."
