Chapter 14: Ward Four
"He wrote me a riddle," Chak said, "and he let me stay on the wrong side of it for two years."
He was propped on three pillows in a private room on the fourth floor, pale under the tan.
A drip ran into his left arm, and a bandage lay thick across his chest.
Pim had told him that morning, and left, and he had been staring at the ceiling since.
Phat sat by the bed with a thermos on his knees.
"It wasn't a riddle," Phat said. "It was a test."
"It was a stupid test."
"You passed it."
"I got shot. That isn't passing, that's an accident." Chak turned his head. "I didn't know. I jumped in front of you because you were there. I would have done it for Mee."
"Would you?"
"No." His mouth twisted. "Fuck. No."
Phat unscrewed the thermos and poured soup into the lid.
It was Fah's, the second batch, and it smelled of lemongrass.
