Chapter 24: The Kingpin's Brother
By September the river house smelled of baby powder, jasmine and boiled milk, and nobody in it slept more than four hours.
Pim had gone back to nursing three mornings a week.
She carried the baby to the hospital in a sling, where the whole ward fought over her.
Mee had built a crib in the garage out of teak off-cuts, in the evenings, with the dog supervising.
It was the best crib in Thailand.
Fah came on Sundays with soup and a laptop and a spreadsheet of the baby's feeding schedule, which she had colour-coded.
"You have a daughter," she told Chak, "and you've never once read the label on a bottle."
"I've read them."
"You read the price."
"It's a very good price," Chak said, with dignity, and the baby, on his shoulder, burped.
Phat started his third year on the first Monday of the month.
He sat in the front row of the lecture hall with his glasses on and a mechanical pencil in each hand.
A black car waited outside the faculty gate with a heavy man in a polo shirt reading a newspaper.
Nobody on campus knew who owned the house on the river, or the docks, or the casinos.
