Chapter 6: Room 114

Room 114 had a radiator that clanked, a coffee maker with a dead light, and four desks pushed into a square.

Over the door hung a hand-painted sign: THE ASHGROVE LEDGER. EST. 1961. CIRCULATION 212.

"Sixty of those are parents," Eliot said, shutting the door behind me. "I count them."

It was Friday, after the last bell.

I had spent the night staring at the ceiling, and the morning pretending not to look at Tate's empty seat in homeroom.

I sat down at the desk nearest the radiator.

Eliot sat across from me and opened a laptop with a cracked corner.

"First thing," he said. "His father can't read your messages."

"He said he'd get them."

"He said he'd try." He turned the screen toward me. "I looked it up last night. Getting account records out of Instagram takes months, even with a court order. He wants you to panic this week."

My shoulders came down for the first time in four days.

"I didn't know that," I said.

"You weren't supposed to. That was the point of the visit."

"You filmed it," I said.

"I film everything. It's a newsroom habit." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I can delete it."

"Don't."

He nodded and looked relieved, which I didn't understand.

"So what do I do?" I asked.

"You don't retract anything. You don't claim the page. The page isn't the story."

"Then what is?"

"You are." He pulled up a blank document. "Delaney Frost, senior, whose college applications were changed without her knowledge. Nobody can sue you for what happened to your own account."
