Chapter 12: Posy

I drove straight from Warwick to the clinic and found Sam in the staff room, eating cold noodles out of a carton.

He put the fork down when he saw my face.

"Sit. Tell me."

I told him what my mother said. He didn't write it down. He just listened with his whole face.

"She has dementia," I said. "I know she does. She mixes up Tuesdays. But she said you were so sick, you were sleeping, and that's exactly how it was. I was under for two days after the first one."

"What hospital?"

"Boston, a big hospital. Odile said they'd sent me to the best."

Sam was already taking out his phone.

"I trained in Boston," he said. "There's a woman I went through residency with who runs the neonatal unit at that hospital now. She owes me for a very long night in 2019."

"Sam, you can't just..."

"I'm not asking for a file. I'm asking for a conversation."

He stepped out into the hall.

I heard his voice through the door, low and steady, and then a long quiet.

I sat in the staff room and looked at his cold noodles and thought about a glass box.

The door opened, and he came back in slowly.

He didn't sit.

"She pulled it up on her own screen," he said. "She isn't allowed to send it. She read me the header."
