Chapter 14: No Rules
Sam did not take me back to my friend's house.
He pulled off the highway outside Providence and parked in front of a brick building with a green door.
"Come up," he said. "I'll make you eggs."
I knew what I was doing when I went.
His apartment was on the third floor, with a window over the river.
He put the surrender paper in a clean folder and set it on the counter, away from me.
Then he cracked six eggs into a bowl and beat them in silence.
I stood at the end of the counter and watched his forearms.
"She picked something off the ground and put it in her pocket," I said. "I don't know what."
"A pebble, probably."
"What do five-year-olds do with pebbles?"
"Keep them," Sam said. "For years."
I laughed, and the laugh turned into something else halfway.
I put my hand over my mouth.
The whisk stopped.
He turned off the burner and wiped his hands on a dish towel.
He came around the counter and did not touch me.
He stood close enough that I could smell the soap, and he waited.
"Say something to me that isn't medical," I said.
His jaw moved.
"Tillie, I said it in the car. I'm your doctor until that baby is out."
"You said it like a man who thought I was somebody's wife."
"I did think that."
"I'm not." I made myself look up. "My papers are filed. I don't owe anyone a wait, Sam."
"That isn't what the rule is for."
"Then what is it for?"
He was quiet for a long moment.
"So I can't be the next man who decides something for you," he said, low. "I've read the notes. I wanted you to have everything handled before I asked you for anything."
