Chapter 25: Grandma's Story

Odile smoothed the blanket over Posy's knees.

"Sit up, darling. There is someone here you should hear the truth from."

Posy rubbed her eyes with her fist and looked across the room.

"That's Tillie," she said. "The cat lady."

"That is the woman who gave you away," Odile said. "She signed a paper on the day you were born, because she did not want you."

The fire cracked in the hearth.

Posy's face went very still.

I took one step, and I couldn't make my feet take another.

"She didn't sign it."

The assistant had stood up from the desk.

Her hands shook so hard that the papers rattled.

"Be quiet," Odile said.

"I wrote that name myself, sweetheart," the assistant said to Posy. "Your grandmother told me to. Nobody signed anything."

"Sit down."

"No, Mrs. Huntington. I've sat down for thirty years."

Margo crossed the room and knelt on the floorboards in front of the daybed, so that her face was level with Posy's.

Her mascara had run down to her jaw.

"Posy, look at me. Everything Grandma just said is a lie."

"Why would Grandma lie?"

"Because it was easier for her to have a secret than a family. And I helped her keep it, for five years." Margo held the girl's hands. "That part is my fault. None of it is Tillie's."

Posy looked at her mother, and then she turned her head and looked at me.
