Chapter 6: The Study
I went on Sunday, because I wanted her to say it in her own house.
My friend parked at the end of the drive with the engine running and her phone in her lap.
"If you're not out in thirty minutes, I'm calling Sam, and then I'm calling everyone else," she said.
My own phone sat in my coat pocket, already recording.
The housekeeper let me into the front hall without meeting my eyes.
The dining room door was closed, and from behind it I could hear the family at their Sunday soup.
They had started without me.
"Mrs. Huntington is in the study," the housekeeper said.
I walked down the hall past six years of family portraits.
Odile sat at the desk with a teapot and two cups set out, and a thin folder in front of her.
She did not stand.
"Sit."
"I'll stand."
"As you like." She poured one cup. "The baby is eleven weeks and four days. Your friend in Providence told you so."
"My doctor told me."
"Your doctor works for a clinic that takes a great deal of money from this family's foundation."
She said it mildly, and it landed anyway.
"What did you want to tell me about my babies?" I said.
She turned the folder toward me and opened it.
Inside was a printed blood report with my name on it and a column of numbers I couldn't read.
"When you married Bancroft," Odile said, "my doctor tested you. It's routine for the women who marry into this house. Your mother carried a trait. It makes the uterine lining unstable. It's why your pregnancies fail, and why the next one would kill you."
