Chapter 29: The Bad Kit
"Posy?" Micah said.
She had gone the color of printer paper.
"I'm going to be sick," she said, and got up and ran for the stairs.
I heard her bedroom door shut.
On the phone, the board chair was still speaking in her evenest voice.
"The unit and the device are being held at the post," she said. "After Thursday the Army's own lab takes it."
"If you want to see it first, you have until then."
"We'll be there tomorrow," I said.
"Ms. Sayle, you are twenty-three weeks pregnant."
"I'm twenty-four, and I'm flying."
Micah went up to check on Posy and came down ten minutes later looking stricken.
"She says it's the podcast," he said. "Too much about the case, and now this, and her stomach is doing something."
"She won't open the door."
"Is it the flu?"
"She says it's feelings." He rubbed his face. "Do we leave her?"
"She stays with her best friend's family. They said yes before I finished asking."
"Okay."
"Okay."
It was the first time in thirteen years she had shut a door on him.
