Chapter 14: Anyone Can Copy a Label

By the time I reached the gate, Brindle Creek had come out of its cabins to watch.

Sixty wolves stood on our side of the road, and forty Ironwood wolves stood on the other.

Ewan was on the porch step with Jory in front of him, one hand on the boy's shoulder.

He caught my eye over the crowd, and I gave him one small nod.

Lorna held up the paper so everyone could see the seal.

"By order of the Moon Council," she read, "Rowena Stockdale is charged with taking the heir of Ironwood across the creek without his father's leave."

A growl went through the Ironwood side.

"She is also charged," Lorna went on, and her voice cracked, "with poisoning him."

The growl rose to a roar.

I stared at her.

"Last night a runner told Alpha Stroud that the boy was found with black pupils and a racing heart," she said. "Those are the signs of nightshade. Everyone here knows who in this valley keeps a garden of herbs."

"I'm the one who treated him," I said.

"You are the one who had him," Lorna said gently.

She looked around the crowd with her wet, honest eyes.

"I begged her not to take him. She wouldn't listen. I never wanted any of this."

I heard a woman behind me whisper, "Poor thing."

My face burned.

Garrick stood beside the Elder's truck with his arms folded, and he said nothing at all.

"Then I'll answer it," I said, and I walked into the middle of the road.

I untied Nan's string and unwrapped the cloth.

I held up the tin where all of them could see the label.

"This was in Jory's coat," I said. "It says night tea, two pinches. It is written in Lorna's hand. Nan Birch has looked at it, and it is full of grey nightshade."

Lorna did not flinch.

"That is my handwriting," she said. "I wrote that label for Jory's cough. It was mullein and honey and thyme."
