Chapter 21: The Words at the Creek
They cut the bond at the treaty stones at sunset, with the Moon Council sitting early because the wards would not wait.
Three Council members in grey robes took the high rocks beside the Elder.
Both packs stood on their banks again, and the creek ran red with the light.
Half the Ironwood wolves were bleary and shaking, with their eyes gone amber and their hands curling into claws.
The mothers held their children close.
I stood in the middle of the stones in a plain green dress, with my hair up so the mark showed.
Ewan stood on the Brindle Creek bank.
He had asked if he could stand beside me, and I had said no, not for this.
This one was mine.
"Rowena Stockdale," the Elder said. "You were bound to Garrick Stroud by treaty and by mark. Do you come to end it of your own will?"
"I do."
"Does anyone force you?"
"Nobody."
"Alpha Stroud. Do you contest?"
Garrick stood on the stones across from me in his black coat.
He had not slept in two days.
His face was ravaged, and his hands were not steady.
"I don't," he said.
"Then say the words, Rowena."
I looked at the man who had tied me to a post.
I looked at him for a long time.
I had thought this would feel like victory.
It didn't.
It felt like putting down something I had carried so long that my arms had forgotten what it weighed.
"I, Rowena Stockdale, reject the bond of Garrick Stroud," I said, loud enough to carry across the water. "I give back the name of Luna of Ironwood. I take back my own."
