Chapter 4: The Generous Alpha
Alpha Dunstan Westerfield came up the stairs with his arms open, and for a moment I forgot to be afraid of him.
He was a big man with a silver-streaked beard and laugh lines around his eyes.
Six wolves from Redfall followed him in, carrying bags.
"Darian, my boy." He clapped Darian on both shoulders. "I came the moment I heard. How is she?"
"Bad," Darian said. "Worse than yesterday."
"We'll fix that." Dunstan turned. "And this is the famous Calla."
I hadn't known I was famous.
He took both my hands in his big warm ones and held them.
"The girl who raised my son-in-law," he said, smiling. "Delaney tells me you're the reason he's survived this long. I owe you a drink."
"I didn't raise him," I said. "He's four years older than I am."
"Then you've done it very discreetly."
He laughed, and Darian almost laughed, and Delaney beamed up at him.
I found that I was smiling too.
That was the worst part.
He was so easy to like that I had to remind myself why my hands were itching.
"Come," Dunstan said. "Let me see Joan. I've brought my own healer."
"Joan isn't seeing anyone new today," I said. "She needs quiet."
"Of course she does." He did not stop smiling. "And you're her nurse?"
"I'm what she's got."
"Then you're what she's got." He patted my hand and released it. "I would only ask that you let me send the tea I brought. It's a blend my wife swore by. Chamomile and lemon balm, nothing fancy. It settles the heart."
