Chapter 21: The Deed

Wynn's POV

The deed was signed at noon, on the same table where the Council had sat.

Ansel had written it out fair overnight in his dry, exact hand, and it took three pages.

My shoulder was bound under my dress and ached when I lifted my arm.

I did not mind.

The five Alphas sat in their travelling coats, and the eldest read the title aloud: the river land, the north hill and the iron seam, returned to Hollowmere in the person of its Alpha's daughter.

There was a line for my name.

I had spent eight years writing other people's names in other people's books.

I wrote my own in my own hand, *Wynn Bramley, of Hollowmere*, and the pen did not shake.

"The Crown's seal," said Ansel.

Dain came forward with the brass seal and the stick of black wax.

He did not pick up the pen.

"Before I press it, I will read the names," he said.

Nobody had asked him to.

He took a second sheet from Ansel, and he read down it in a clear steady voice, one name at a time.

Twenty-one of them.

I stood with my hands at my sides and listened to my own stolen name come eleventh in a King's mouth.

When he reached the young man's, I heard a sound from the benches.

He sat there with his scarred eyebrow and his collar sores half healed, and he put his face in his hands.

When Dain reached the seventeenth, the tall girl bent forward and said, very softly, "Tam."

The silent girl, the youngest, put her hand on the tall girl's back.
