Chapter 10: Two Envelopes
"Yet?" Gannon said.
He stepped out of the pool house so I was behind him.
The producer laughed and held up both hands, the cable swinging.
"Whoa. Easy, captain. I'm on your side."
"You don't have a side."
"Sure I do. The ratings side." He looked past Gannon at me. "Do you know what our number one comment on that clip is? 'Stepsiblings to lovers, I'm calling it.' Forty thousand likes."
"I'm aware," I said.
"So give me that. On camera. A look across the table. A hand on the shoulder during the promo. A little 'will they or won't they' before the twentieth."
"They won't," Gannon said.
The producer looked at my dress strap again.
"Sure," he said. "Then you've got nothing to worry about."
He coiled the cable over his elbow and walked back toward the house, whistling.
Gannon stood very still on the pool deck.
"Is he going to tell her?" I asked. "The executive producer?"
"Not yet," Gannon said. "He said so. He wants something first."
"What?"
"Whatever he decides is worth it."
He didn't kiss me again.
He walked me to my car through the side gate so we didn't have to pass through the house.
He stood on the curb until my taillights turned the corner.
I watched him in the mirror the whole way.
