Chapter 11: Whose Side
"We call the show," I said. "Right now. Both envelopes."
"Not yet."
"Gannon."
"Give me one day," he said. "He's my father. I want to hear him say it."
"And if he doesn't?"
"Then I'll know that, too."
The wind roared in his phone.
"Nine tomorrow," he said. "His office. Come with me."
Smile by Boyle takes up a whole corner of Ventura Boulevard in Encino.
Glass front, white leather chairs, a fish tank with one sad orange fish, and a huge photo of Hal's teeth over the reception desk.
At nine on Tuesday morning the waiting room was full.
Patients with clipboards. Parents with coffee. A man in scrubs with a toddler on his knee, here for somebody else.
And behind the reception desk, in a white blouse with a name tag that said LORRIE, was my mother.
She went pale when she saw me.
Then she saw Gannon, and she went paler.
"Hal's with a patient," she said.
"Get him," Gannon said.
"He can't be disturbed."
Gannon held up his envelope.
White. Sealed. Smile by Boyle in blue on the top left corner.
He didn't lower his voice.
"I'll wait here," he said. "In front of everybody."
The man with the toddler looked up.
My mother picked up the phone and pressed a button and whispered into it.
Hal came out in his white coat thirty seconds later, snapping off a pair of blue gloves.
"Son!" he said, big and happy. "What a surprise."
"This came to my boat," Gannon said. "From your office."
He held it out.
Hal didn't take it.
"I've never seen that in my life."
"It's your envelope."
"It's my stationery," Hal said. "There are five hundred of those in the supply closet. Every patient in this room has walked past them. Every one of you could've taken one."
