Chapter 4: I'm His Wife

For one minute, nothing happened.

The little wheel spun under my reply.

Then the first notification came in.

Then ten more.

Then my phone started buzzing so hard it walked across the tray table on its own.

I turned it face up and watched the numbers climb.

Two hundred replies.

Nine hundred.

Four thousand.

"WAIT. The poor idiot is HERE?"

"She's wearing the earrings. SHE'S WEARING THE EARRINGS."

"Professor Jonathan Kendrick. The composer? From the university?"

"I called this romantic yesterday. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, Ellie."

Somebody had put the screen recording side by side with Clarissa's posts.

Somebody else had found Jonathan's faculty page and pasted his photo under mine.

His hand was in it, resting on a music stand.

The fishhook scar was right there for the whole world to see.

By midnight, the thread had a new name.

#PoorIdiot was trending in six countries.

Clarissa's comment was still pinned at the top.

But the likes had stopped climbing.

Under it, the new replies were all the same word.

"Shameless."

I didn't sleep that night either.

This time it wasn't because I was crying.

At three in the morning, I read every single reply.

At four, I read them again.
