Chapter 13: Founders Night
Rory's POV
By seven on Saturday, the Larkin Room was full.
Someone had strung gold paper stars from the rafters for Founders Night, and the old dining hall smelled of hot cider and wet coats.
Sage and I stood at the back by the doors.
I had on her denim jacket again, because the green one was still behind Preston's door.
"You don't have to go up there," I said.
"He wants me on a stage." Sage tied off her braid. "I'm going to let him have one."
Above the crowd, Ben sat in the booth with the headphones around his neck.
He saw me and lifted two fingers off the board.
I lifted two back.
At seven-fifteen, Preston walked out to the mic in a navy blazer, and the room applauded before he said a word.
"Thank you, everybody." He smiled at the front rows. "Some of you saw me post a jacket a few weeks ago."
People laughed.
"It got complicated. I learned something from it." He put a hand over his heart. "When you stop chasing the wrong person, the right one has been standing there all along."
"Oh, he's good," Sage murmured.
"Sage Telfair," Preston said. "Come up here."
The spotlight swung off him and found her.
Ben was driving it. I saw his hand move on the board.
Two hundred faces turned to the back of the room.
Sage walked down the aisle in her big gray sweater and climbed the steps with her chin up.
Preston put his arm around her shoulders.
"Sage and I have been seeing each other for a week," he told the room. "She said yes at coffee, and I want everybody to know how lucky I am."
The crowd cheered.
Brooks whistled from the front row, loud and alone.
