Chapter 5: Her Old Room
Michael set his glass down without drinking.
He pushed back his chair and walked out of the dining room.
Nobody else seemed to notice.
The captains were on their feet, shaking Ottavio's hand in celebration.
Claudia accepted kisses from the wives with her eyes lowered.
Then, over the shoulder of the Quincy captain's wife, she looked straight at Francesca.
And smiled.
Francesca got up.
She didn't go after Michael.
She went up the main stairs, past the photographs of First Communions and graduations, to the end of the second-floor hall.
Her old bedroom door was closed.
She opened it.
The walls she had painted dark green at fifteen were pale yellow now.
Her desk was gone.
Her bookshelves were gone.
The corkboard of postcards from museums she'd never seen was gone.
A white crib stood under the window where her bed had been.
A mobile of felt clouds hung over it, turning slowly in the draft from the door.
On the dresser sat a stack of tiny folded onesies, still with the tags on.
She opened the closet.
It was empty except for a garment bag with a christening gown inside.
"Mama had the painters in last month."
Claudia stood in the doorway.
She closed the door behind her with a soft click.
"Where are my things?" Francesca asked.
"Boxed up. Some of them." Claudia walked to the crib and ran a finger along the rail. "Your sketchbooks went out with the recycling. They were mostly drawings of Michael anyway. It was embarrassing for him."
Francesca didn't answer.
She was looking at the felt clouds.
