Chapter 12: The Wire
The lawyer stood there waiting for someone to make a scene.
Nobody gave him one.
Maddie got up from the cooler, took the empty folder out of his hand, and put a bowl of burned chili in it instead.
"For the road," she said.
He left with it.
Fletcher sat on the bumper with the charge sheet in his lap.
"He put you on it so you can't speak for me," Noel said.
"Yes."
"You're the only one who knows where I was at six that morning."
"And now I'm a defendant." Fletcher folded the page in half. "A defendant's word is worth nothing at the furnace. He knows that."
"He moved it up so we can't get ready."
"He moved it up because the bay is full." Fletcher looked at the line still curling around the dumpster. "Every night it stays full, his story gets thinner."
The text came the next morning, to Noel's own phone.
He didn't know Clay had his number.
Of course Clay had his number.
Lunch. Just us. The steakhouse on Grant Street, 1 p.m. I have an offer that keeps your sister in school.
Fletcher read it over Noel's shoulder in Fenella's kitchen.
"No."
"I didn't ask."
"Noel, he had someone shoot at you yesterday."
"In a warehouse in Ohio. This is a steakhouse on Grant Street at lunch. There'll be lawyers eating salads."
"He'll offer you something you can't refuse."
"Then I'll pretend not to refuse it."
Fenella came out of her room holding something the size of a matchbox.
"I bought it online at two in the morning," she said. "It records and it sends to my phone. I've tested it on the cat."
"How did the cat do?"
"She said nothing incriminating."
Fletcher stood very still by the stove.
"I'll be outside," he said finally.
"You'll be three blocks away. If he smells you, it's over."
