Chapter 9: Stavely Silver
Fletcher parked the truck two blocks down, behind a dead car wash.
"Stay here," he said.
"No."
"Noel."
"I'm the only one who knows what moonwort extract looks like in a drum. You'd photograph a barrel of floor wax."
Fletcher looked at him for a long second.
"Downwind," he said. "And if I say run, you run."
"If you say run, I'll consider it."
The loading door was open two feet at the bottom.
They went in under it on their stomachs.
Drums.
Rows and rows of blue plastic drums on pallets, all the way to the back wall.
Every one of them had a white label.
STAVELY PHARMACEUTICALS. MCKEES ROCKS. MOONWORT EXTRACT. NOT FOR RESALE.
Noel crouched behind the first pallet and started counting.
He stopped at sixty.
That was more than forty drums.
Voices came from the far end, by an office with a lit window.
Clay's laugh. Noel would know it anywhere. It was the one he used for cameras.
Noel eased forward along the pallets until he could see.
Clay was leaning on a forklift with a tablet in his hand.
Across from him stood a big man in a canvas work coat, with a gray beard.
He had the eyes of a wolf who had never been told no.
The Youngstown alpha.
"Sixty-two drums," Clay said. "Pure. You won't find better on this continent."
"The price went up."
"The price went up because my brother suddenly wants to know where his extract goes."
"Your brother's on his knees for the omegas now, I hear."
"My brother," Clay said, "has decided he owes the whole city an apology."
The Youngstown alpha snorted.
"And your chemist?"
"My chemist," Clay said, smiling, "is going to be exiled for this. Every bit of it. He signed the lots. He wore the collar. He nested in the boss's closet like a stray cat. The pack will be grateful to me for getting rid of him."
