Chapter 10: What Bennett Saw

Bennett's POV

I stood between my cousin and the door, and I realized I wanted him to try.

"Your key, Gavin," my grandmother said again.

He dug it out of his pocket with a shaking hand.

He held it out and didn't let go of it.

"Gran, please. I have nowhere to go."

"You have an apartment on Park Avenue that I have been paying for."

"It's empty. She took everything."

"She took two suitcases," I said. "And a box of letters you hid."

Gavin's eyes flicked past me, up the stairs.

Joanna had come out to the landing, one hand on the rail, her face pale.

"Baby," he said. "Please. One conversation."

"No," she said, from above.

It was a quiet word, and he flinched.

"I'll make this right," he said. "Whatever it takes. I'll give up everything."

"You've given up nothing yet," said Gran. "That is the trouble."

She took the key, and she opened her hand over the umbrella stand and dropped it in.

"The car is outside, Gavin. I suggest the Plaza. You know the way."

He stood there a long moment, red-eyed and breathing hard.

Then he picked up his bags and walked out into the cold.

I shut the door behind him and turned the lock.

Then I took out my phone and called the hotel group's night line.

I cancelled the company card in Gavin's name, and I froze his signing rights on every account.
