Chapter 14: What He Never Asked

"Get out, Gavin," said Beatrice.

She did not raise her voice, and she did not need to.

"Friday is nearly a week away. I suggest you spend it finding four million dollars."

Gavin looked at the man in the black overcoat, and at the envelope, and at me.

Then he walked out of the study with his wrong cuff and his empty hands.

The lawyer from Veronica's father bowed to Beatrice and followed him.

I stood in the middle of the carpet and found that my hands were cold.

"I'll be in my room," I said.

Bennett said my name, and I kept walking.

I took the stairs one at a time, holding the rail, because I had made a promise to a doctor and I was going to keep it.

I heard him come up behind me, three steps back.

He didn't touch me, and he didn't speak until we were both inside my room and he had pushed the door shut behind him.

He stayed there with his back against it.

"Say it," he said. "Whatever it is. I'd rather hear it."

"It isn't the money."

"No?"

"I don't care about the four million. Gavin stole it."

I took a breath.

"I care that you knew about the chair."

His face did not change.

"You told me on the bench that you saw it every year," I said. "You said you saw the line on his ring finger. You told me that, and I thought it was a terrible mistake and a kind apology."

"It was both."

"You left out the rest."

"What rest?"

"You sat three feet from an empty place for three Christmases, with a full plate and a napkin, and you never once said to Gavin: who is that for?"

He opened his mouth and closed it.

"Your grandmother wouldn't explain it, and you stopped asking her. You've been the one man in that house who never lets a lie stand in a room."
