Chapter 15: Front Page

Beatrice's doctor came on Sunday morning with a bag, an ultrasound cart and no patience for nonsense.

She was a small gray woman who had delivered half the family, and she took my pulse before she took her coat off.

Bennett waited in the hall, and I could hear him not pacing.

The screen showed the same tiny flicker, strong and fast.

"The tear is closing," the doctor said. "Two more weeks of care and it will not trouble you."

"Can I ask you something?"

"Everyone does."

I lowered my voice.

"Is there anything I shouldn't do? In general. At home."

She looked at me over her glasses.

"Is the question about the stairs?"

"No."

"Ah." She turned off the machine. "Gentle is fine. Nothing that makes you short of breath, nothing with force, and stop if you cramp. I expect you to be sensible."

"Define gentle."

"My dear, you are twenty-seven and not a fool," she said. "You'll know."

She left, and I sat on the edge of the bed with my face burning.

Teagan was in the doorway in her puffer coat, with her red hair half out of its knot.

She had heard all of it.

"I'm so proud of you," she said. "I'm going to cry at the table."

"Don't you dare."

We went downstairs together, and that was when I heard the street.

It was loud.

Thirty photographers stood on the sidewalk outside the front gate, shouting two names.

Bennett was at the front window with his arms folded.

"Jo, don't," he said, when he saw my face. "I'll send them away."

"You can't send them away."

"Gran's lawyer says say nothing."

"Gran's lawyer isn't on the front page of a kitchen counter."

Beatrice came down the stairs on her cane, fully dressed, with her pearls in.

"I am told," she said, "that there is a mob at my gate."
