Chapter 23: The Door Held Open

The doors to the City Hall chapel were propped open with two brass doorstops.

I had asked for that myself.

Bennett stood in the doorway in a charcoal suit, with his hand on the frame.

He had told the guard he would hold the door himself, and he was doing it.

"Name?" said the guard, holding a clipboard.

"Joanna Keene," I said. "I'm the bride."

The guard looked at his list for a long moment, with great ceremony.

"I don't see you on here."

My heart did something stupid.

"I'm kidding," said the guard, a heavy man with a gray mustache. "Your friend with the hat gave me strict instructions. Congratulations, ma'am."

Bennett laughed so hard that he had to lean on the wall.

I went in with the baby on my arm.

She was eight weeks old, in the white gown with the seed pearls.

She was asleep with her fist against her cheek.

The chapel was the same room.

It had the same brown benches and the same dusty flag.

The clerk's desk was the same one where I had signed my name in front of two strangers, three years ago.

This time the benches were full.

Teagan sat in the front row in a red dress, crying already, with her bag on her knee.

Teagan's cousin from the bakery had brought the whole morning shift.

The old man in the postal jacket was in the second row, wearing a tie.

The housekeeper and the cook sat together, in hats.

The doctor with the dry voice sat at the back, pretending she had come by accident.

At the end of the front bench sat Beatrice, in a plum-colored coat and an enormous hat.

Her cane lay across her knees.

She turned and looked at me down the aisle.

She did not smile, exactly.

It was something larger and quieter, and it made my eyes sting.

I walked toward them.

Nobody had asked me to be a secret, and nobody had told me where to stand.

At the front, the clerk read the old words.

When she asked who had come to witness this, three dozen people answered at once.

Bennett said his vows in a low, steady voice, and halfway through he stopped.

"I'm going to start that over," he said. "I can't remember if I said it right."

"You said it right," I said.

"I want to say it twice."

The clerk smiled.

I said mine without a paper.

"For three years I was somebody's secret," I said. "Today I'm nobody's. I'm going to be loud about you for the rest of my life."
