Chapter 17: Sunday Event

I pulled Elliot's shirt over my head, and I opened the door myself.

Elliot said my name once, low, and stepped back.

He didn't speak for me.

Dane stood on the landing with a folded paper held up.

Behind him were two big men in blue jackets, with *Crocker Clinic Security* stitched on the chest.

Neither one wore a gun or a badge.

"Morning, gorgeous," Dane said. His nose was taped across the bridge, and both eyes had gone purple. "We're here to take you home."

I held up Elliot's phone.

The red light was on.

"Say that again," I said. "For the recording."

Dane's grin wobbled.

"I have a judge's order."

"Read it to me."

He shoved the paper at me, and I read it aloud, slowly, in my clearest voice.

"*Any peace officer is authorized to return the patient to the clinic.* Peace officer, Dane. Which one of you is a peace officer?"

The security men looked at each other.

On the stairs below, a door opened, then another.

The woman who ran the laundromat stood there in an apron, and behind her a young man with a baby on his hip held up his phone.

"Three men are trying to drag a woman out of her flat," the woman said loudly, to nobody. "I'm calling it in."

"It's a court matter!" Dane snapped.

"Then the police can look at your court matter."

One of the security men muttered something and started down the stairs.

The other followed him.

Dane stayed where he was and looked at me, and I saw his eyes go to the hem of the shirt.

"You know what I think?" he said softly. "I think you like it. I think you've always liked it."

Elliot came up beside me.

"Dane," he said, very quietly.

Dane laughed, but he went down.

"I sell cars till six, gorgeous!" he yelled from the street. "Come and find me."

I closed the door and leaned on it with my heart going.

"I'm going," I said.
