Chapter 19: The Gala, Part Two
In the dark, three hundred people gasped at once.
Glasses clinked.
Somebody laughed, high and nervous, and somebody else lit a phone.
Colin's grip on my wrist did not loosen.
"Whatever you think this is," he said in my ear, "it's over."
Then the great white screen behind the stage flared to life.
It was the screen meant for the memory wing's slideshow.
The picture on it was a hospital bed.
A woman lay in it with her hair stuck to her cheek, crying.
It was me.
A man's hands were wrapped around mine, and a man's voice said, soft and warm, "Easy, Merry. Your memory only lasts three days. I'll fill you in. I'm not going anywhere."
The camera tilted up.
It was Colin's face.
A counter in the corner of the screen read *Morning 1*.
The ballroom went completely still.
The picture changed.
*Morning 22.* The same bed, the same hands, the same tender voice, and me again, crying.
*Morning 61.*
*Morning 94.*
Each time a bed, a hand, a voice that said the same words, and a woman who believed them.
"That's enough," Colin's father said from the stage, without raising his voice. "Turn that off."
Nothing happened.
"Turn it off!"
Bridget had locked the booth from the inside, and the AV technician was sitting on the floor with a cup of coffee she'd bought him.
The screen split in two.
On the left, the raw video, with Colin at the bedside.
On the right, the same clip, with another man's face laid over his.
I heard Elliot breathe in.
The right-hand man was Elliot, with his own voice dubbed over Colin's words, saying, "Easy, Merry. I'll fill you in."
