Chapter 13: October Fourteenth
Every camera in the room swung off the trophy and onto me.
The reporter kept the paper up so they could get a good shot.
I could feel the confetti stuck to the back of my neck.
Under the table, Sutton's knee pressed against mine and stayed there.
"Can I see it?" I said.
She walked it up and laid it in front of my microphone.
I read the whole thing.
The part number. The shop stamp. The two little letters in the engineer box, slanted the wrong way.
Then I looked at the date.
October fourteenth.
I laughed.
I didn't mean to.
It came out of me.
"No," I said. "That's not my signature. And I can tell you exactly where I was that night."
The room went quiet.
"My daddy had a heart attack on October twelfth. He was in the ICU at the hospital in Hickory for six days. I slept in a chair next to his bed every one of those nights."
I put my finger on the date.
"October fourteenth, I signed the visitor log at nine at night and again at six in the morning. The night nurse brought me a blanket at two. She'll tell you so. She told me she'd tell anybody."
A reporter in the back said, "Can you prove that?"
"The hospital keeps the log. Go ask for it."
"Then who signed this?"
I looked down the row of cameras.
"Ask who runs the machines at Tillery Racing after the shop goes dark," I said. "Ask who has a key. Ask who told them what to cut. It wasn't a woman sitting in an ICU in Hickory."
The finishers sit in the media center in order.
