His Uncle's Obsession: After I Seduced Him novel · Chapter 15 of 32

Chapter 15: Rain

I stopped ten feet from him with my keys between my fingers.

"Alone," I said.

"Alone." He spread his hands like a man being generous. "He built it. He forged it. Mama takes care of him. You come back to the #17. You come back to the house. Everybody forgets this by Labor Day."

"And you."

"What about me?"

"You told him to build it. In his ear, the same week I told you no in your kitchen."

His smile didn't move.

"That's not how I remember it."

"You don't remember it. You decide it."

He took a step closer.

I didn't step back.

"Em. Look at you." His voice went soft, the voice he used on sponsors' wives. "You're living in a barn. You're sleeping with my uncle. You're forty minutes from a Waffle House. Come home and I'll fix all of it."

"You'll fix it by having a man with a family say he did your crime alone."

"He'll get paid."

"Then he'll be lying for money, and I'll be clean on a lie, and you'll still be the man who did it." I walked past him to my door. "No, Crews."

He put his hand flat on the window of my truck.

Not on me.

On the glass, right where I had to open it.

"Here's what's going to happen, then," he said.

The softness was gone.

"Nobody in racing is ever going to hire you. Not after this season. You know what they call you in the garage now? Not E.B. They've got a better one."

"I don't care."

"The girl who slept her way down a family tree." He smiled. "From the nephew to the uncle. Next year, who? Granddaddy's dead, Em. You're running out of Tillerys."

I opened the door into his hand.

Hard.

He yanked it back and swore.

I got in and locked it and started the truck.
