Chapter 22: Her Name on the Roof

I looked at Sutton.

He'd heard every word through the phone.

He didn't say anything.

He didn't nod or shake his head.

For once in his life he was waiting to be asked.

"I'll call you back by morning," I told the boot lady.

"Morning's fine, honey. Sunday's not."

I hung up.

"Well?" Sutton said.

"Not in a barn door at ten at night," I said. "I've got a crew that stood up for me this morning. They get better than a phone call."

He nodded slowly.

"That's right," he said.

I drove back to Concord with the windows down.

At seven the next morning I was sitting outside the owner's office when he came in with his coffee.

He took one look at me and sighed.

"Come in," he said. "Shut the door."

I told him all of it.

I told him his shop was the best place I'd ever worked.

"Then stay," he said.

"I came back into racing because a man in a barn let me write my name on his car with a paint marker," I said. "I want to finish what I started there. I'm sorry. I'd rather tell you to your face than let you read it."
