Chapter 15: Twenty Dollars
Nine days passed between Kari's tarts and Solveig's birthday.
I did not tell him in any of them.
That is the part I can't blame on a mother, or a sister, or a sheet of rules.
On Saturday the seventh, at four-thirty, I parked the Subaru in front of Isak's building and sat with my hands on the wheel.
He came down the steps in a navy sweater I had never seen.
It had been ironed.
He carried a wrapped box under one arm and a white paper bag in his other hand.
He got in and looked at me, and put the bag on my lap.
"A lefse knife," he said, nodding at the box. "For Mom. And that is for you."
Inside the bag was a small tin of the dark hand cream I used at the shop.
I had mentioned it once.
"Isak," I said. "Before we go in. I have to tell you."
"I know." He put his hand over mine on the gearshift. "I'm going to ask you to wait. Please."
"Why?"
"Because I have a speech for you."
He smiled at the windshield.
