Chapter 20: Whitney's Invitation
The invitation was cream-colored, with a gold edge and a stamp shaped like a heart.
It sat on his kitchen counter on Monday morning, between the toast and the honey.
I had slept in his bed for the second night running.
He had not said much, and neither had I.
We had held each other.
I stood in my T-shirt and looked at it.
"Whitney and her fiance," I read. "An engagement party. Friday. Six o'clock, at a restaurant in Canal Park."
"She wrote on the back," Isak said.
He turned it over.
In round blue ink, Whitney had written, I'd really like you to come. I'd like to say something. W.
"Are you going?" I asked.
"Yes."
"Okay."
"Alone," he said.
I set the invitation down carefully on the counter.
"I'd like to do it by myself," he said.
"I don't want to turn up with someone beside me."
"She'd look at the person beside me, and she might not say whatever she's been waiting a year to say."
"That's fair."
"It isn't about you."
"I know it isn't."
"I'm not shutting you out." He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "I'm trying to find the edge of what's mine."
"Then I won't ask to come." I picked up my coffee. "I'll ask one thing."
