Chapter 22: First Date
Isak knocked on my door at five o'clock on Saturday, and held a single stem of celery.
I looked at it.
He looked at it.
"This was not on the list," he said. "I bought flowers, and the florist's was closed, and I panicked at the grocery store."
"It's celery."
"I'm aware."
"It's a vegetable that looks a little like a flower if you squint."
"That was my reasoning," he said.
I took it from him and kissed him on the mouth.
I kept the celery in a jar on my windowsill for a week.
He had planned the date for twenty-one hours.
He told me so in the car, in a voice of dignified terror.
He had made a list of four items, with times, and a fifth item labeled backup for rain.
"You can read it," he said. "I'd like you to see how bad it is."
"I don't want to read it."
"Please."
I read it at a red light.
One, the Lakewalk, five-fifteen.
Two, dumplings, six-thirty.
Three, bridge, eight.
Four, "see what happens."
I turned to him, and found him staring out the windshield with his ears red.
"Four is my favorite," I said.
"I didn't know what to write."
"That's the best thing on here."
We walked the Lakewalk in the last light.
The wind came off the lake sharp as a knife.
Isak took off his own gray scarf and wound it around my neck twice before I could say anything.
"You'll be cold," I said.
"I'm wearing wool. I'm Norwegian."
"I'm half Norwegian."
"Then you should have brought a scarf."
