Chapter 23: The Apology

Isak rang his mother's doorbell.

He had a key on his ring, and he used the bell anyway.

It was Sunday, five o'clock, eight days after the birthday.

The light in Lakeside was going gold over the roofs.

He held my hand on the step.

"I'd like you to know I haven't decided what to say," he said.

"Good."

"I have a list."

"Of course you do."

Solveig opened the door.

She had her sweater vest on, buttoned wrong, and her eyes were puffy from a day of not sleeping.

She looked at our joined hands, and then at Isak, and then at me.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

"Thank you for asking," Isak said, and walked in, and I followed.

The table was set for five.

Kari sat on one side with her husband beside her.

Leif sat on the other with his hands flat on the cloth.

There was no roast.

There was a pot of coffee, and a plate of lefse, and a pie under a dish towel.

Nobody was eating.

On Isak's place mat lay a single typed sheet of paper.

He picked it up.

It had a heading in bold.

TERMS.

Isak raised an eyebrow at his mother.

"I borrowed your font," said Solveig.

"I don't have a font."

"You have a way of doing it."

"I looked at the one you left on the table."

She sat down slowly.

"May I speak first?"
