Chapter 29: One More Story
Dean's POV
The old man who owned the garage on Third Street paid me eighteen dollars an hour and called me "the new kid."
I was thirty-five years old, and I liked it.
It was a Saturday in April, and I was under a delivery van with a drain pan when I heard boots stop by the bay door.
"Dean."
I slid out on the creeper.
Delilah stood in the doorway with the baby on her hip, in a clean blue jacket and her hair cut to her chin.
She had been out of the hospital four months.
She worked the dish room at the Rolling Mile now, five days a week, and she went to a group on Tuesday nights that she never talked about.
"I'm not here to ask for money," she said.
"Okay."
"I went to the courthouse on Thursday."
She shifted the baby, and he grabbed a fistful of her collar.
He had my chin and my mother's mouth, and now he had teeth coming in.
"I'm changing his name," Delilah said.
Everything in the bay got very quiet.
"The judge signs on Monday. He's going to be Eli Dean Metzger."
I wiped my hands on the rag, slowly, one finger at a time.
"Why the Dean?" I said.
"Because he's half yours, and I'm not going to pretend he isn't." She held my eyes. "But the other name belongs to Diana. I took it, and I used it, and I'm giving it back."
My throat went tight.
"Wyatt used to hold my sleeve at Diana's door," Delilah said. "He'd say, Aunt Delilah, stay for one more story."
"I remember."
"I stayed. Every time he asked, I stayed, and then I used it on you. I used that little boy to keep you in my apartment."
"Delilah."
"Let me say it."
I let her.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I've been sorry every day since. It doesn't do anything, I know."
"It does something."
"Don't be nice to me, Dean."
