Chapter 4: The Crib

Dean was on the porch step when I came out with the elephant in my hand.

He had walked across the lawn past his own garbage bags without touching one.

"That was in the garage," he said.

"I know where it was."

"Di, let me explain what happened in March."

"Where is his crib?"

He opened his mouth and then closed it.

"Dean, I'm not asking about the party. Where is Wyatt's crib?"

He looked at the mobile in my hand, and I watched him understand that Delilah had given me the way here on purpose.

"Pine Street," he said quietly. "Apartment 2B."

"Thank you."

I went down the steps and past him.

He followed me to the truck Connie's grandson had left in my driveway, and when I got behind the wheel, Dean got into the passenger seat without asking.

I let him.

I wanted him there.

Pine Street was nine blocks of rowhouses with metal stairs bolted to the fronts.

I climbed the one marked 2B with the elephant in my fist.

The door was not locked.

Delilah was in the kitchen, and she saw me and put her hand over her mouth.

"Diana, you can't just walk in."

"Where's the nursery?"

"Please don't."

I walked through her apartment.

The couch was new, the curtains were new, and there was a framed photo on the bookshelf of Dean's hand holding a tiny foot.

The spare room had a pale yellow wall, a rocking chair and a changing table I did not recognise.
