Chapter 10: The Leak
Niall wanted to tear the yard apart.
Kieran wanted to walk out and find the man with a camera himself.
I wanted breakfast, and then I wanted a name.
"A photographer outside the wall would have needed a ladder," I said, at the kitchen table at six in the morning, with a mug of coffee going cold in my hands. "That window looks into the yard. The yard has a gate guard and a locked door. Whoever took it was inside."
Orla slapped a spiral notebook on the table.
"Gate log," she said. "Nine to midnight. Eleven names. Four of them are Carricks."
"Which of the other seven works in this kitchen?"
She ran a red fingernail down the page and stopped.
"The cook's nephew. He's been on the dish line six weeks. He's on the dock crew most days. He's good with his hands."
"Is he on Seamus's payroll?"
"He's on the dock," Orla said. "Everybody on the dock is on somebody's payroll."
I turned the idea over.
I had worked a bar for nine years, and I knew what a man looks like when he's been caught pocketing tips.
He doesn't run.
He gets very helpful.
"Don't confront him in the kitchen," I said. "Tonight is Sunday dinner, and all the captains come. I want every one of them at the table when he's caught."
Niall frowned.
"In front of the captains?"
"In front of everyone."
That morning I told the cook, and only the cook, that Kieran would sit alone in the back garden at seven o'clock with his eye bandaged.
At seven that evening her nephew, a nineteen-year-old in a dish apron, slipped out of the kitchen door into the dark yard with his phone held low.
