On Wednesday at three o'clock my old firm held its monthly all-hands in the atrium.
Ninety lawyers and staff stood around a long table of sheet cake, under a banner that read, Thirty Years of Excellence.
Marcy and I walked in off the elevator with visitor badges clipped to our coats.
The judge had Delaney's phone.
Delaney had walked it into chambers herself at ten to five on Tuesday.
The judge had told both sides she would read every message before she ruled.
That gave me until Monday and a mouthful of anger with nowhere to go.
The managing partner stood on a low step with a microphone, thanking everyone for a strong quarter.
He saw me at the back and his smile stayed on his face a half second too long.
"Hannah," he said into the microphone, warmly. "What a surprise."
