Chapter 19: The Count
The Count sat in the great hall of the Lakehouse, under the atrium, and the atrium had its shutters down.
Iron panels covered every pane of the glass ceiling, bolted shut against a sun that had already gone down.
Thirty-one vampires stood in rows along the walls in the lamplight.
I had not counted them the first night.
The elder sat on a plain wooden chair on a low platform at the far end.
She was no taller than a child, with her ring of keys in her lap.
Ragnar stood alone on the floor below her in his camel coat.
The man in the grey coat stood a step behind him, with his gloves in his hands and a smooth blank face.
Torsten walked in beside me, and Berit walked in on my other side with her framing hammer on her belt and her chin up.
Nobody stopped her.
"A charge is laid against the master of this House," the elder said, in her thin dry voice. "The accuser will speak."
My four sentences went out of my head.
I walked to the middle of the floor and took the freezer bag out of my pocket.
