Chapter 16: The Executive

I went down to the gate in Corin's hoodie and bare feet, with him a step behind me carrying a flashlight.

The man outside the bars was wet and apologetic, in a windbreaker with the hood up.

"Hedy DeHaven?"

"Yes."

"I'm sorry about the hour. Nobody's home at your old address." He pushed a thick envelope through the bars into my palm. "You've been served."

"Thank you," I said, which is a stupid thing to say to a man holding a lawsuit.

"It's just a job," he said, and he walked away into the rain looking like he meant it.

I opened it under the gate light.

It was two hundred and fifty thousand dollars with a seal on top.

Corin read it over my shoulder, and I felt him go quiet and heavy behind me.

"I'll pay it," he said.

"No."

"Hedy."

"You'll pay a lawyer, if I ask," I said. "You won't pay this. It's mine."

He breathed out through his nose, and he didn't argue.

That was the first time I understood he was learning something too.

On Monday morning, Stage 4 held three hundred people and one man in a grey vest.

The crew had been called for an announcement, and they stood in rows between the cameras with their coffee, and nobody was happy.
