Chapter 19: The Board

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.

The line was quiet for a while.

"Because I sat in a chair by the wall on Thursday," my stepmother said, "and he didn't even look for me."

She hung up.

Wyeth was awake.

He was lying on his back watching me, one arm behind his head.

"Who was that?"

"My stepmother. My father's selling the company on Tuesday. Before my shares can vote."

He sat up.

"He thinks the registration takes a week?"

"That's what he says."

"It takes a week when nobody's pushing." He reached past me for his phone. "My grandmother has a team of lawyers and nothing to do on a Sunday."

"Wyeth. You're suspended."

"I'm suspended from a bank," he said. "I'm not suspended from my grandmother."

My mother's lawyer called me back at eight on Monday morning, clearly having been woken up by a Wainscott.

By Monday afternoon my forty percent was on the register of Fairbairn Hotels, with a stamp and a date.

Monday, July 13.

At 8:50 on Tuesday morning I walked into the glass tower by O'Hare.

I'd been in it maybe five times in my life.

My father had always said I didn't belong in head office.

I wore my mother's navy suit, taken in at the waist by the seamstress who'd unbuttoned the wedding dress.

I had the brass keys in my pocket and a thin folder under my arm.
