Chapter 13: Nine Folders

The envoy read the order in the Gathering Hall at noon, with every wolf of Stonebrook on the benches.

Dane sat at the council table with his hands flat under it.

Sydney sat beside him, in her grey cardigan, with her eyes red from crying.

"By the seal of the Lycan King," the envoy read, "the Rite of Prince Soren Draycott will be held on the third night from this one."

"It will be held at the Moon Stone of Stonebrook, before the Alphas of three neighboring packs and the Stonebrook council."

A murmur ran down the benches.

"Three days," Emmett said under his breath.

"The Prince's mark and his mate's mark are closed," the envoy went on. "A closed bond will not wait thirty days. The court's bondstones lit in the Alps at dawn."

"The Alpha of Stonebrook will stand witness as host."

Dane got to his feet. It took him two tries.

"It's an honor," he said, and his voice came out thin.

I felt Soren beside me do a sum I couldn't see, and the answer frightened him.

He didn't look at me. We had not looked at each other since the guest room.

When the envoy finished, Soren stood. "I have to sign for this," he said. "Linnea."

"Go," I said.

It was all I could manage, and I felt it land in him badly.

I was halfway down the corridor to the guest wing when Emmett fell into step beside me.

"Five minutes," he said. "Then you can throw something at me."

"Emmett."

"He'd skin me for this. Come on."

He pulled a leather case out from under the bed in our room and set it on the quilt.

Inside were nine folders, each with a small portrait clipped to the front.

Nine young women, in good dresses, with good names, each from a line as old as mine.
