Chapter 9: Soren's POV: The Moon Stone

Soren's POV

The woman in the grey cardigan was very good.

I had sat through years of trials in my father's hall, and I had never seen anyone cry that well.

"The leaves came from the traveling herbalist," Sydney said, to the whole hall, with the tin in both hands. "She sold them as chamomile and heart tonic. I never knew."

"I'd never hurt the Alpha. He's like a father to me."

She turned to Dane, and he put his arm around her.

"She's been up with him every night for two years," Dane said. "She's the last person who'd do this."

"Then the herbalist's name?" I asked.

"She didn't give one. She came with the autumn market."

"Convenient."

"It was a market," Sydney said, with a little hurt sob, and half the hall glared at me.

I let it go.

I noticed where her eyes went when the healer said steady, small and daily.

They went to the tin.

Linnea had seen it too. I watched her face while she said nothing.

The council ruled the matter held for inquiry.

Anders was carried to his rooms with the healer at his side.

The tin went into a locked cabinet in the packhouse office.

I was not satisfied, and I was not surprised.

That night I couldn't sleep.

The room was too small, and she was too near.

She lay curled on her side of the wrecked pillows with one hand tucked beneath her cheek.

I could hear her breathing. I could smell her hair.

My wolf had been restless since the airport.

Now he paced under my skin, wanting out and wanting her.

At two in the morning I gave up and went up the ridge.
