Chapter 12: The Gift
Corwin unfolded the letter with hands that would not stay still.
He read the first lines silently, and then he read them aloud, in a voice I had never heard from him.
"My son. If you are reading this, I am dead, and you have found the grove, which means you have finally stopped listening to your uncle."
He swallowed.
"I have not got long to write. The healer says I will not see morning, and I have one dose of blackthorn left in the cold cabinet, which would give me three more weeks if I took it."
I sat very still in the damp moss.
"There is a girl in my kitchen," Corwin read. "She is nineteen and scrubs the pots too hard. She has been in my house six weeks, and she smells of you, and of something else. Of a pup."
My breath stopped.
"You do not know yet. She does not know yet. I know, because I am old, and an old wolf's nose does not lie."
"Oh god," I whispered.
"I have decided what to do with my last dose," the letter said. "I will leave the cabinet open tonight. I do not think she will take it unless she needs it, and if she needs it, she will. A half-blood child cannot be carried by a human mother without it. I have watched two women die of that. I will not watch a third."
Corwin's voice broke.
"Do not hunt her, son. Do not blame her. I gave her the dose, and the pup, and you, my blessing, though you must forgive an old man for not telling you to your face. If the child lives, and I think she will, she will need you. Be better than I was."
