Chapter 16: The Challenge Ring
The ring was the clearing where Corwin had caught me on the moss.
I could not look at the place without my face going hot.
Now the moss was trampled flat, and a circle of white stones had been laid around it, knee high.
The whole pack stood behind the stones with torches, and above the black pines the moon came up huge and orange.
The old healer had brewed all afternoon from my tin box of blossoms.
She had made two doses, thin and bitter, and I had injected both into Corwin's arm myself.
"Two of five," I told him, behind a pine, where nobody could see my hands shake.
"It's two more than I had."
"It isn't enough."
"Then I'll be quick."
"You'll be careful."
He cupped my face and kissed my forehead, and his lips were still too hot.
