Chapter 12: The Roof
Stewart looked at Beth for a long moment.
Then he looked at me.
"She goes inside," he said. "She sleeps in her own bed, in this house, with her grandparents and her father in it. Not with you, Beth. Not tonight."
"Stewart..."
"You don't get to decide who she goes home with. Not after the closet. Not after Riverview."
My father came across the lawn and stopped beside him, shoulder to shoulder.
Neither of them said anything.
Beth looked at the two men, and at my mother on the steps, and at the dark windows up and down the street, where I could see the shapes of people watching.
She was a clever woman.
She had never in her life lost an argument in front of a crowd.
She stepped forward, and she kissed Junie on the forehead.
"Be good for Daddy," she said.
She handed her over without a struggle, and Stewart took her.
Junie buried her face in his neck, still hiccupping.
Beth got into the car.
"I'll call a lawyer in the morning," she said through the open window. "I'd think about that if I were you, Stewart. I'd think very hard about what you want in a courtroom."
The engine started.
She pulled away from the curb without looking at me.
I stood on the cold lawn in my socks, and I watched her taillights until the street swallowed them.
Then Stewart turned, with our daughter on his arm.
He didn't hand her to me.
He didn't have to.
He just came and stood next to me, close enough that Junie's curls brushed my sleeve.
She turned her head and looked at me with one wet eye.
