Chapter 5: The Man in the Room

"Say that again," I said.

"I'm the anesthesia record." Daniel Westerfield kept both hands where I could see them. "I was in the room. I ran her airway."

The lot was almost empty.

A night nurse was walking to her car with her head down, and the security guard was fifty yards off, eating a bagel.

I could have yelled, and Daniel knew it.

"Not here," I said. "Get in the passenger side. The doors stay unlocked. If I lean on the horn, the guard comes."

"That's fair."

He folded himself into the little white sedan and sat with his knees against the dashboard.

I sat behind the wheel with my keys still in my fist.

"Start talking."

He stared through the windshield for a long time.

"She was awake when she came into the OR," he said. "Kit. They called me in at three thirty. I put the mask on her myself."

I made a sound I didn't mean to make.

"She was joking," he said. "She had a head injury and a broken wrist and she was joking. She asked if I knew you."

"Me?"

"She said her sister was a nurse across the river. She said she was sorry about your car."

I put my hand over my mouth.

"She said, 'Tell her it wasn't my fault,'" Daniel said. "Then she went under."

I looked out the side window until I could see again.

"She was stable," I said. "She was stable until she wasn't."

"Yes."

"What happened in there?"

"At about six I was told to silence the monitors."

His voice was flat.

"The alarms were going. Her pressure was dropping and the machine was telling everyone in the room. I was told to mute them and to hold her breathing on the bag by hand, and not to touch the drug lines."
