Chapter 7: Terms

"Kit," I said, and let my voice break. "I text her number. I know it's stupid."

Mitchell crossed the room and sat on the bed beside me.

"It's not stupid."

I held the phone out so he could read what I had sent.

I miss you, Kit-Kat. Good night.

He read it, and then he put his arm around me and his chin on my head.

"Let me take it for tonight," he said softly. "You need to sleep. You're going to make yourself sick."

"It's the only place she still answers."

"She doesn't answer, sweetheart."

"I know. Please."

He was quiet for a while.

Then he gave me the phone back and kissed my temple.

"Okay," he said. "Okay. But come to bed."

I lay awake until the sky went gray with his hand heavy on my hip.

In the morning, Camilla made tea.

She set the mug in front of me, and Mitchell stood behind my chair with his coffee, saying he'd already talked to a counselor who could see me Thursday.

"Camilla says she's wonderful," he said.

"I'm sure she is."

"You'll go?"

"I'll go."

My hand was tight on the mug, and it was so hot I wanted to let go and couldn't.

When Camilla laid her palm against my shoulder, the mug cracked in my grip.

It split along the handle and a shard went into the heel of my hand.

I did not scream, because I am a nurse.

I looked down at the blood running into my sleeve and said, "Oh. Hold on."

Mitchell and Camilla were both talking at once.

She wrapped a dish towel around it, and he said he'd stitch it.

"It's fine," I said. "It's a scratch. I'll clean it myself. Don't you have a bleed to get to?"
